The author of the thesis was UNal student Carlos Mauricio Gómez and only Latin American at the festival said he did not need special equipment to carry out production effects in real time. He also said that although video art is a very personal experience of the author this does not hinder sound and image to strongly impact the viewing public.
The producer of the film emphasizes on three principal components of video art: Aesthetics, communication and technology. The first refers to elements such as image composition and camera movements; the second to feelings and sensations the product transmits to the spectator, and the third to the audiovisual project equipment and formats used to carry out the project.
Gómez" thesis is divided into two parts: one depicts the story and the other speaks of his experience and as an audiovisual producer.
To support his presentation to the judges and the attendees, Gómez used two short films as examples: "Land of no return," a 20-minute film he produced during his senior year, and "Interesting to look through your eyes," a freshman project which lasts for just two and a half minutes.
The filmmaker says he used both short-films with the purpose of "explaining concepts and techniques used in his thesis."
In "Land of no return," Gómez uses images of abandoned locations in the city of Medellín which have not changed through time: "It is an existentialist metaphor on the human being which leaves a place, comes back and does not feel anything," he added.
For this film, he used just a few post-production effects. He shot in black and white, played with the lights and shadows and experimented with several camera movements to convey all types of sensations through imagery and sound.
The award bestowed to Gómez is special as generally the UNal School of Cinema and TV wins awards for its long and short films but never for thesis projects.
The prize was granted by Mohammad Tamjidi, Head of the category of articles and thesis; Saeed Tavakolian, responsible for Educational Affairs of Iranian Youth Cinema Society, Farid Farkhondeh Kish, Director of the Festival and by the Iranian Ministry of Sciences.
