His long experience in the Air Quality Vigilance Network ( Redaire) in Medellín, along with his years as a professor in the Faculty of Mines until 2008,lead this Colombian to work in the US as a highly specialized professional on environmental pollution.
Bedoya graduated from Industrial Engineering, and obtained a PhD in Environmental Engineering. Since 1988 he led several investigations related to air quality in Medellín, Cali and Ibagué. With Redaire "where he was the Chief Director" he started working in 1994. In the San Francisco Public Health Department, he elaborates noise level and air quality maps.
According to the Professor, the noise level study developed in San Francisco provided them with a great amount of information on vehicular traffic. He pointed out that the city benefits from this information and has now quantified the vehicular emissions and their contaminating consequences.
"The project integrated those two database and generated an inventory of the emission sources, which, together with meteorology studies, helped us to modulate the air quality, that is, the air concentration levels in the city," explained Bedoya.
According to the evaluations he coordinated, it was established that San Francisco"s air quality is fairly good, especially because there are no motorcycles. The average noise level in the city is 65 decibels, 70 at some areas, which is acceptable.
"The next step, a very important one, is to generate a database with all the information, for the Municipality to use it regarding construction permits allowances, and to control vehicular traffic, for instance," said Professor Bedoya.
