David Bushnell died last Saturday in Florida (U.S.A)

The professor was known as the pioneer in Colombian studies since he was the first to introduce this topic in academic circles in the U.S.

According to Professor Catalina Reyes, vice-rector of the campus in Medellín, one of his most important works is "Colombia. A Nation in Spite of Itself" published in 1996, since it is the first work translated into English in which Colombian history is shown.

Bushnell visited Colombia for the fist time in 1948. His doctoral thesis about the first government of General Santander established his closed relation with Colombia. Since that moment, he became the most recognized contemporary historian in the topic of Colombian history.   

Other important texts tackle international relations of Colombia during Eduardo Santos" government and the Colombian electoral system during the XIX century. Some titles are The Santander Regime in Gran Colombia, Eduardo Santos and the good neighbor and the emergence of Latin America.

During his most recent visit to the country, last April, the historian participated in the Alfonso López Pumarejo Forum, the invention of a Modern Nation, State, Democracy and High Public Education organized by Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Likewise, he was invited to the program Hechos y Relatos de Nacion produced by Unimedios and broadcasted in Zoom channel last august 27^th, in which he tackled three important topics: Francisco de Paula Santander and the Gran Colombia; Santander"s liberal inheritance and the radicals, and the context of the one thousand days war. Bushnell was a master and doctorate in Hystory at Hardvard University (U.S), a member of the Colombian Academy of History and professor emeritus at University of Florida.
