Artistic solar tree recharges cellphones
The device has three solar panels on the tree, transforming solar light into energy which is used to recharge cellphones.Manizales, 18 de mayo de 2016 — Agencia de Noticias UN-
Professor Carlos Vargas Hernández is the Director of the UNal-Manizales Laboratory of Optic Properties.
It also has easy to acquire batteries lodged at the bottom of the tree so they can also serve as charging devices and backup energy source for the tree lighting, a decorative feature of the tree.
“What I did was to blend technology and art using certain emerging energy alternatives, such as solar energy which is acquiring a great impact for its environmental friendliness and the current energy issues around the world,” said the creator Professor Carlos Vargas Hernández and Director of the UNal-Manizales Laboratory of Optic Properties.
The tree can charge two cellphones thanks to the 400 milliamperes output. The device has 3 small 5 volt solar panels. Furthermore other types of batteries may be connected to the tree for charging.
“The tree also has internal protection circuits, both for the batteries as for all the systems for an autonomy of several days. If the tree is left in the sun no other external device is needed for it to function as it would have the enough energy for charging,” said Vargas.
According to Vargas, when there is no sunlight the internal batteries on the bottom of the tree begin to work and they also light up the tree at night.
“The nickel batteries are recharged by the solar panels. In other words this is an autonomous system which does not need external intervention, as all the energy is taken from the sun,” said Vargas.
These types of batteries have several charge/discharge cycles enabling stability for several months inclusively years of autonomy.
Solar panels have an average lifespan of 10 years. Batteries can last up to two years with good maintenance and protecting charge and discharging cycles.
“Trees take their energy from the sun during their lifetime. I used this symbolism because it not only enables producing natural life but also energy,” said Vergas.
Vargas has still not calculated the price of the tree in the market but he hopes to continue producing different and scalable and even larger prototypes which not only recharge cellphones but also outdoor lighting systems.
Therefore he encourages new professionals to use new technologies that will help obtain clean and autonomous energies; besides blending it creativity o simple art which is an additional attractive.(Por: Fin/JDMP/MLA/DMH/APBL
