Cell phone camera for measuring foliar area

The foliar area is a parameter used to asses the growth of plants and the impact of different factors such as climate or diseases. Additionally, it is a widely used tool to estimate the production speed and height.
Natalia Rincón, a zootechnics student and researcher says, “what we wanted to do, using cell phone easy access technology was a handheld tool to measure foliar area, different to how it’s measure in laboratory conditions, which is very costly and very uncomfortable to use in field work”.
Researchers used three types of cameras, a professional, a cell phone camera and a web cam. They obtained several profiles that resulted equally efficient. Researcher Manuel Andrés Solarte, adds, “the correlation between the data from a foliar area measurement tool and our method is almost perfect”.
The system devised was to put a leaf over a pink piece of paper and an opaque glass over the leaf in order to avoid glitter and flatten the item with the purpose of having an homogeneous and valid surface area. After taking the photo, the information was inputted into Image J. freeware software.
The software outputs a black and white image and registers measurements of the dark area, converting pixels into centimeters. This is made possible referencing known area squares in order to precisely calibrate the scheme.
The cell phone proved most effective, despite the professional camera provides more detail. Even so, all three cameras must be placed parallel to the leaf in order to avoid distortion caused by deformation of the area.
